My response:

I wager on all plays. I have to admit although I am very anal when it comes to figuring out plays I am derelict in keeping track of my wagering balances and usually only have a ball park most of the time when paying off or collecting. Its something I keep planing on working on but never get around to it.

Saturday was a good day. We had 7 ncaa bb totals and went 5-2. We went 1-1 on ncaa fb totals . And won our Ohio +2.5 play in ncaa fb for a 7-3 day.

Nothing the last few weeks in way of plays I would wager on in the nfl and again this week nothing....although if Houston goes to 3.5 before game time that would qualify as a play for me.

I went 3-2 in the hilton contest last week bringing my record to 29-24-2.

Sports Comments:

As a further comment to yesterdays email. When you get to the point that you loose your confidence after a big drawdown its almost always right to take a break for a few weeks or even months to get everything back in perspective. That way if there is anything subtle that you are unaware of contributing to your downward spiral it will allow you to regroup.

I received the following email:

Since I admire your handicapping and bankroll management I wanted to get some advice to you. My football betting over the last 3 years has been profitable. about 75% of my action is in College, 25% in NFL. College is obviously my strength. My bets range from $100, $150 and $200 with maybe 2-3 wagers during the year at $500. I don't bet NFL, MLB or Basketball (I take a break from football and play poker)

At one point I was up about $2600, but over the last two weeks I am down over 50 units (1 unit = $50).

My best stretch during every year is bowl season, so I'm considering taking a break from NFL for the rest of the season, and only coming back in bowl season, as my confidence has really been shot after these last couple of weeks. I know everyone has regression, but I haven't seen one like this in a while since I bet 90% underdogs and that has usually reduced some of the variance.

I'd love to get some advice from you.

My Response:

Variance is one of the hardest concepts for gamblers to grasp. The true professionals understand it completely and give it respect. In sports betting the edge you have(if you have any at all) is very small. After all if your laying -110 you have to overcome 5% just to break even and if your laying -105 then its 2.5%.

Compare this to the house edge in craps of 1.4 percent and those of you that have tried it know its a losing proposition. Also compare to Blackjack. If your a card counter then you may have an edge overall of around 1 to 1.5 percent. If your a 25 dollar unit bettor then your earn rate is about 4 dollars an hour and you probably need a bankroll of at least 25,000 and still have a 10 percent chance of going broke! ( these numbers are based on memory so are not exact but ball park ) And again the house edge with no counting and using basic strategy is around 1.5 percent.

So in sports betting your trying to overcome a pretty high Vig. Much higher then many casino games.

Now.....in the house games your betting every few min. So your sample size gets pretty high in a short period of time. A year of blackjack should give you a good idea where you stand as to your earn rate of you play regularly. But in sports the sample size dosnt get high enough for many years. My guess would be it would have to be 10 years or more before you can become confident you have a positive earn rate.

Your 3 years of betting probably has 0 reliability in determining if you have a positive or negative ev. You just have to put in the years. ( I have been on this blog for going on 3 years now and probably only have 1500 wagers)

The way to approach sports wagering is to keep it in prospective. Its like working crossword puzzles for me. I do it in the morning when I get up. I usually have a spreadsheet on each sport that I take with me to the Bellagio. And then first try to find wagers with the players at no juice. And then the last resort is laying the -110.

Also I approach it as entertainment. If i were to go through a 50 unit downswing it would hurt my ego and have a negligible effect on my bankroll.

Finally remember of the betting population I would say there are only about 1/10th of 1 percent that can actually grind out money betting on sports. Thats about 1 in 1000 bettors. And it might be less then that!

Now you probably know sports bettors that seem to make money betting sports. But the sample size is so small in sports betting that variance saves some bettors for a short period of time. You see that all the time at the poker table.( But usually after 3 or 4 years those players are not around )

I received the following email:

"It seems as if there have been (up until this week) a significant reduction in the number of plays this year versus the last couple. Any reason you can see or guess as to why this is. Particularly in the college game. I don't know enough about net neutral analysis."

My Answer:
There are a few reasons:
1. As to ncaa fb totals the rule change this year has eliminated the overlays that were available last year..or so it seems to me

2. Nfl sides it seems have become tougher this year since there is less value given in games such as Seattle yesterday +3. Two years ago I am convinced the linemakers would of had that number at +7...but they seem to have adjusted for the the sharp bettors this year making it much harder to find overlays in the nfl.

3. ncaa fb seems to be on par with the last few years although not as profitable this year.

4. The rest is still a work in process. I have come to the conclusion in the nba, mlb, and nhl that to find overlays you almost always have to wait until game time to see what the variables say.

5. As to ncaa baskets...still too early to tell.

Saturday we went 1-2 on regular ncaa fb. Our 2 late plays in football went 1-1 . Our ncaa bb late play on the over in the drake game lost(we couldnt overcome the first half 35 points scored) and our late play in the nhl won again for a +130 on Colorado.

In the Nfl this weekend there is again nothing very close I would wager on. That bring 2 weeks in a row where this has happened. It may be my imagination but the lines this year are the toughest I have seen for percentage bettors. There are very few instances where the books are giving much value I can see. A good example this week is Seattle +3 against arizona. Two years ago it would be +6 or even +7.

Last week in the Hilton contest I went 2-3 bringing my record to 26-22-2

I am going to change my format a bit. On days that there are no plays I am going to give games that I would wager on with no juice ie what I consider a slight edge.

Now you might ask where can I get no juice. And the answer is with your poker buddies!

Now one caveat.....If you win consistently from your poker buddies they will get mad and if they beat you there will be some needling you will have to endure.(especially when you have the under covered easily on the Akron game but they go on to score 35 pts in OT)or you have NO -1 against the lakers and N.O is never ahead the entire game( I know that because I had a wager 3 min into the game that N.O would have the lead before the end of the game)

Also I will update my record on days that I post a regular play.

There should be many late plays today in all sports.

Late plays will be posted as soon as I am convinced the variables I look at produce solid value.

In addition its time to remind everyone to read or reread the required reading portion of the blog in the upper left hand corner.
